A key that can be copied is no key.
Most wallets store your private key directly on your smartphone. This is convenient — and precisely the weakness: whatever data is present on the smartphone can be copied. Anyone who has a copy can impersonate you without anyone noticing.
The DI Card separates both. The smartphone displays your credentials, while the card proves that they belong to you. The key is generated within the security chip and technically cannot leave it — the same principle that has protected your bank card for over 25 years.

Questions about the DI Card
We are currently developing support for software-based cryptography as well. While this is less secure, the official wallet of the Federal Republic of Germany will issue credentials at this lower level of security.
Until we complete this implementation, you can only use the app with the DI Card. The advantage: With the card, your key is not stored on the smartphone, but in a security chip — for anyone who does not want to entrust their identity to a device.
Nothing that would compromise your identity. The key is on the card. Install the app on the new device, pair the card — and you are back in business and can have your credentials/authorizations reissued.
Without your smartphone and your PIN, a person who finds the card cannot do anything with it. You are using a successor card, which, just like in real life, you have designated as the heir to your previous DI Card. That is precisely why the starter set will always contain 2 DI Cards, so that you always remain able to act in the event that one DI Card is lost.
With any smartphone that supports NFC - which means almost all current devices. Does contactless payment work for you? Then the DI Card will also work.
